In the even numbered chapters we are brought back to the same place and it’s 1871 where Thatcher Greenwood is trying to teach evolution, much to the disgust of the townspeople. There’s still another part of the book though. ![]() The is a novel about family dynamics and it is explored in a profound way. In lesser hands this would have been melodrama overload but Kingslover never lets over-sentimentality dominate the text. Her house is falling to pieces, her son’s wife has committed suicide and leaves a baby in tow, her father in-law is dying, her wayward daughter has no idea what to do with her life and her husband’s salary is all they have. On the surface it definitely is a family saga, but one in the vein of Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections or Freedom but there’s an eco theme, which reminded me of Richard Powers’ The Overstory. In fact I am sitting here struggling to find words on how to describe this book. ![]() ![]() Unsheltered is my third Kingslover novel and I was taken by surprise. ![]()
